5 Tips for a Green Earth All Year

5 Tips for a Green Earth All Year

As Earth Day approaches this coming Saturday April 22, 2017, we'd like to share our top 5 tips to make our mother earth greener, not just for one day but all year long...

-Turn Off Lights: Always turn off incandescent bulbs when you leave a room. You will save energy from not using the bulb itself, but also on cooling costs, as lights contribute heat to a room.

    - Make your own Cleaners: Say goodbye to commercial toxic cleaners. Try a mixture of vinegar, water and your favorite essential oil for a diy, eco and effective all-purpose cleaner or check out our toilet bowl cleaner recipe below!

Use One Less Paper Napkin: During an average year, an American uses 2,200 napkins- around 6 each day. If everyone in the U.S. used one less napkin per day, more than a billion pounds of napkins could be saved from the landfills each year.

Brush Without Running: You've heard this one before, but maybe still do it.You will conserve up to 5 gallons of water per day if you stop.

Choose Glass: A plastic bottle takes 400 years to decompose, choose glass whenever possible and reuse your old plastic containers.

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. As I am getting closer to the birth of my second child, a baby girl this time around, I find myself often repeating this simple mantra. Until my child can make her own choices in this world, it is up to me to do so for her. What a big responsibility that is, right? A responsibility that I am sure gets more complex as our children grow.

Today though, as I sit looking at the little nook we have created with so much love for our soon to arrive baby girl I want to focus on those early decisions: what we choose to buy, receive and/or reuse to welcome them into this world.

    1. REDUCE- I am so grateful to so many mamas before me who honestly and generously shared the truth with me when first bombarded with the insane, overwhelming world of baby products: YOU REALLY DON’T NEED THAT. It’s so wise. It’s often correct. These simple words will free you and allow you to focus on gathering those things you will truly treasure. Choosing less will also free up some of your budget so you can invest in organic and fabrics (I am a BIG Burt Bees Baby fan, and couldn’t live without Aden & Anais organic swaddles) and sustainable/recycled materials (love wooden Plan Toys & Babyletto eco-friendly and multi-purpose cribs).
    1. REUSE- Choosing to have less “stuff” can be such a challenge when everyone around you wants to give you so much in celebration of this new life. Here is where reusing can be such a blessing. It not only allows you to minimize waste and your baby’s first footprints but it lets those who love you give. So RECEIVE. Say yes to hand me downs, and strollers and baby books and toys. Be part of this cycle of generosity that experienced Moms know so well and us newbies are just getting to glimpse. RECEIVE, then GIVE, then RECEIVE again. And don’t forget to take a look around your own home. Or visit your favorite thrift stores to find that special piece that will make your nursery both lovely and green. In our case, my old desk became the perfect changing table and our yellow vintage pantry became shelving for baby clothes. My favorite spot for furniture finds you can transform with a little TLC here in Miami is the Bargain Barn in Wynwood (2233 NW 1st Ct).
    1. RECYCLE- Baby gear often ends in landfills. As so perfectly expressed by the people at Baby Earth “landfills are icky”. So take advantage of their hassle free baby gear recycling program or research similar ones in your area. Another big way to minimize your impact is to choose a recycled diaper, or better yet go with cloth. We did a combo and fell in love with Charlie Banana Organic Cotton Wipes, Bambo Nature Diapers and OsoCozy Better Fit Unbleached Prefolds.

Simplify your Life, Embrace the Capsule Wardrobe

Simplify your Life, Embrace the Capsule Wardrobe

It's the beginning of the year and we usually feel inspired to start fresh, clean up and get rid of the clutter...

In that spirit, simplicity is a big theme for us this year. Here at Calamarie we have been thinking about ways to simplify our work and our lives to focus on what truly matters and gain clarity about how to continue to move forward in a balanced and conscious way.

For many of us one area of chaos and clutter is usually our closet. Every morning women all over spend so much time and money going through endless outfits to find pieces that makes us feel beautiful and comfortable. It may seem as if the act of clothing is superficial but it is not, our clothes are a necessity as they protect our bodies from our environment and are also a reflection of ourselves. What we wear is visual and artistic expression of how we decide to show up in the world. Our purchases also have the power to change the world and we can choose to buy items that are thoughtfully made (eco-friendly, handmade,  fair-trade etc) that can support the livelihood of people worldwide and the wellbeing of our planet.

Imagine if you could be more intentional in how you shop and build your wardrobe. Imagine if you could simplify your morning and easily choose what to wear.  If you could free up your time and money, what could you accomplish instead?

    Introducing: the capsule wardrobe.

What is a capsule wardrobe? It is a system for simplifying our lives and dealing with closet chaos. According to Courtney Carver of, it is "a small collection of 33 items including clothing, jewelry, accessories and shoes that encourage you to wear your favorite things every day (not the trendiest things, the most stylish things, or the perfect things … your favorite things).

Another favorite Caroline Joy at, shares this simple definition: "It’s a mini wardrobe made up of really versatile pieces that you totally LOVE to wear. For Unfancy purposes, it’s a 37 piece wardrobe that includes tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear, and shoes."

The idea is that all of the pieces work together and you have less pieces to chose from, therefore you have less decisions to make. You only keep items in your closet that are truly meaningful, making more room for other areas of your life. Simplicity = Joy

What is in our capsule? Here at Calamarie we like a mix of simple and bohemian, our wardrobe includes our favorite jeans and tops and classic pieces like a jean dress or a black dress with dash of fun. Depending on the season and the occasion we may have some floral tops and dresses with sandals or a chunky sweater and boots. We also rotate our favorite Calamarie necklaces and bracelets to add a bit of color and joy to any outfit. Here are some of our go to outfits....

A few tips to buy her the perfect gift...

A few tips to buy her the perfect gift...

Giving is the best part of the holidays. Let it be love, friendship and/or meaningful gifts, we love it all. Still, at times we struggle with finding something that is both special and meaningful for those we love.

We know that our purchases can change the world and what we buy from matters on social and environmental levels. For those of you looking to make some conscious choices this holiday season, here are a few tips to find a good gift:

    • Think about the women you love, what are her hobbies? Try buying products that she can use in her daily life.
    • Observe her style, does she wear bold colors and statement pieces or does she go for more delicate and dainty accessories? Try to match accessories to her personal style.
    • What is she missing in her life? Could she use a little pampering, maybe a gift certificate to a local spa or massage therapist.

    Some products we love:

    • For the active woman- checkout, eco yoga gear made from plastic bottles
    • For the woman who loves self-care - checkout, amazing organic and natural skin care
    • For the chef - we simply love Ellie Krieger's The food you Crave, you can buy her book through amazon or

    Thank you from the heart

    Thank you from the heart

    Hi there,

Ahh…Thanksgiving, I can already smell the juicy turkey, savory stuffing and cinnamon apple pie. As the my favorite holiday approaches, the thought of gratitude surrounds me and I begin to ask myself, what am I truly thankful for?

Like bubbles the words start to pop up in my mind, I’m thankful for so many blessings…

…being a mother and having Tomas my son who challenges me every day to be my best self and for the amazing opportunity to carry new life (a little girl!) in my womb

…being a wife and having Juan by my side ,who always shows unconditional love and support

…being a daughter and sister, for I would not be who I am today without my family

…having the passion and vision to continue to bring joy, consciousness and beauty to the world through Calamarie and the chance to make a difference in the lives of our artisans and customers.

…and for you who support our work and make it possible for us to continue to create and bring you honest, handmade, fairly traded, eco-chic and above all joyful pieces of wearable art

I share these words of gratitude from my heart in the hopes that you will do the same. What are you grateful for today? Make your list and together lets celebrate what a beautiful gift life truly is.

    With Love,
