Simplify your Life, Embrace the Capsule Wardrobe

Simplify your Life, Embrace the Capsule Wardrobe

It's the beginning of the year and we usually feel inspired to start fresh, clean up and get rid of the clutter...

In that spirit, simplicity is a big theme for us this year. Here at Calamarie we have been thinking about ways to simplify our work and our lives to focus on what truly matters and gain clarity about how to continue to move forward in a balanced and conscious way.

For many of us one area of chaos and clutter is usually our closet. Every morning women all over spend so much time and money going through endless outfits to find pieces that makes us feel beautiful and comfortable. It may seem as if the act of clothing is superficial but it is not, our clothes are a necessity as they protect our bodies from our environment and are also a reflection of ourselves. What we wear is visual and artistic expression of how we decide to show up in the world. Our purchases also have the power to change the world and we can choose to buy items that are thoughtfully made (eco-friendly, handmade,  fair-trade etc) that can support the livelihood of people worldwide and the wellbeing of our planet.

Imagine if you could be more intentional in how you shop and build your wardrobe. Imagine if you could simplify your morning and easily choose what to wear.  If you could free up your time and money, what could you accomplish instead?

    Introducing: the capsule wardrobe.

What is a capsule wardrobe? It is a system for simplifying our lives and dealing with closet chaos. According to Courtney Carver of www.bemorewithless.com, it is "a small collection of 33 items including clothing, jewelry, accessories and shoes that encourage you to wear your favorite things every day (not the trendiest things, the most stylish things, or the perfect things … your favorite things).

Another favorite Caroline Joy at www.un-fancy.com, shares this simple definition: "It’s a mini wardrobe made up of really versatile pieces that you totally LOVE to wear. For Unfancy purposes, it’s a 37 piece wardrobe that includes tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear, and shoes."

The idea is that all of the pieces work together and you have less pieces to chose from, therefore you have less decisions to make. You only keep items in your closet that are truly meaningful, making more room for other areas of your life. Simplicity = Joy

What is in our capsule? Here at Calamarie we like a mix of simple and bohemian, our wardrobe includes our favorite jeans and tops and classic pieces like a jean dress or a black dress with dash of fun. Depending on the season and the occasion we may have some floral tops and dresses with sandals or a chunky sweater and boots. We also rotate our favorite Calamarie necklaces and bracelets to add a bit of color and joy to any outfit. Here are some of our go to outfits....

Our Founder- In her own words

Our Founder- In her own words

"Calamarie has surpassed my wildest dreams—and has been driven by the many women who have believed in it and nurtured it. It is these women who wear our pieces with pride and joy who make it all possible and who continue to take me to new and unexpected places." - Catalina Lemaitre, Calamarie Founder
It is most rewarding when a dream, a vision, an idea turns into a reality that exceeds the limitations of our own imagination. Back in 2008, I was traveling around the world as a project manager for the U.S. State Department. It was an exciting and demanding job, but I knew that I had more to give if I could find a way to combine the things I am really passionate about. On a trip to my hometown of Cartagena, Colombia, I was inspired by the crafts that I saw there and returned with a new mission—to support and empower these talented women artisans in Colombia, to preserve traditional crafts, and to bring more art and beauty into the world through the creation of a line of natural and eco-friendly fashion accessories.
I pride myself on developing long-term relationships with artisans, promoting fair trade and social responsibility, and helping to build our artisan’s capacity and support their growth. For most of these women artisans, their craft is their sole income. I believe that ethical businesses can have a tremendous impact on the lives of people around the world--many of us don’t realize that every time we make a purchase we are also making a choice about what kind of world we want to live in, because the things we purchase have a huge impact on the planet and are connected to the real people who make them. My hope is that more people will want to shop consciously and support artisans when they understand their story, when they know a little something about where the item came from and what it means.
I named the company in honor of the indigenous people of Cartagena, Colombia, the Calamarie--to pay homage to the traditional arts, culture, and crafts of those local communities across the country. After meeting artisan Mery at a street market in Bogota, we started to collaborate and developed Calamarie’s signature Orange Peel Collection. This was for me a pivotal moment as a woman and a social entrepreneur when I had to decide what kind of life I wanted for myself and what I wanted to build with my life--it really became a question of finding my purpose and bringing beauty and joy to this world. I now travel to Colombia three times a year to work with dozens of talented artisans for the creation of new designs and to oversee production. The rest of the year, I spend sketching new styles and uses for orange peel and all the other fabulous natural materials we work with, going to trade shows, helping our customers with their re-orders, managing our operations, taking care of my gorgeous toddler Tomas and dreaming about the days when I had free time to go to Yoga and cook a meal from scratch.

A few tips to buy her the perfect gift...

A few tips to buy her the perfect gift...

Giving is the best part of the holidays. Let it be love, friendship and/or meaningful gifts, we love it all. Still, at times we struggle with finding something that is both special and meaningful for those we love.

We know that our purchases can change the world and what we buy from matters on social and environmental levels. For those of you looking to make some conscious choices this holiday season, here are a few tips to find a good gift:

    • Think about the women you love, what are her hobbies? Try buying products that she can use in her daily life.
    • Observe her style, does she wear bold colors and statement pieces or does she go for more delicate and dainty accessories? Try to match accessories to her personal style.
    • What is she missing in her life? Could she use a little pampering, maybe a gift certificate to a local spa or massage therapist.

    Some products we love:

    • For the active woman- checkout www.teeki.com, eco yoga gear made from plastic bottles
    • For the woman who loves self-care - checkout www.annmariegianni.com, amazing organic and natural skin care
    • For the chef - we simply love Ellie Krieger's The food you Crave, you can buy her book through amazon or www.elliekrieger.com

We curated this gift guide to give you some ideas for the perfect gift...You can also take a look at our Holiday Gift Guide Pinterest Board for more ideas.

    Thank you from the heart

    Thank you from the heart

    Hi there,

Ahh…Thanksgiving, I can already smell the juicy turkey, savory stuffing and cinnamon apple pie. As the my favorite holiday approaches, the thought of gratitude surrounds me and I begin to ask myself, what am I truly thankful for?

Like bubbles the words start to pop up in my mind, I’m thankful for so many blessings…

…being a mother and having Tomas my son who challenges me every day to be my best self and for the amazing opportunity to carry new life (a little girl!) in my womb

…being a wife and having Juan by my side ,who always shows unconditional love and support

…being a daughter and sister, for I would not be who I am today without my family

…having the passion and vision to continue to bring joy, consciousness and beauty to the world through Calamarie and the chance to make a difference in the lives of our artisans and customers.

…and for you who support our work and make it possible for us to continue to create and bring you honest, handmade, fairly traded, eco-chic and above all joyful pieces of wearable art

I share these words of gratitude from my heart in the hopes that you will do the same. What are you grateful for today? Make your list and together lets celebrate what a beautiful gift life truly is.

    With Love,
